About Our Professional Machine Service: Drilling

As a way to create holes, drilling is one of the most common techniques used in the manufacturing process. In contrast to other hole-making methods like boring, reaming, and tapping, drilling is most often used to create holes in unbroken surfaces. In precision machining, drilling ranges in scope from simple rough hole drilling to complex multi-feature drilling. Stay on this page to learn more about this type of machine service that we, at DeMeo Associates, LLC, offer our clients in Moultonborough, NH.

Many households have common hand drills they use to create holes in walls or wooden surfaces. While these tools are very easy to use and highly portable, when speaking of machining, they are not ideal for making accurate, repeatable holes in metal. A step in the right direction is the drill press. This machine features a table that holds the metal surface steady, and a head that raises and lowers and holds a spinning drill bit.

CNC machines can add various levels of complexity to the basic configuration of the press, but most function under the same principles. The following components make nearly every machine: head, spindle, chuck, platform, and drill bit. The drill bit is what makes a difference in the complexity of the holes.

For instance, for stepped holes or holes with different diameters, there are two different methods of drilling. Using simple drill bits, our operator can start with a larger drill bit and drill to the desired depth for that diameter, then use a smaller bit and drill a smaller-diameter hole deeper into the workpiece. Another way to drill holes with multiple diameters is to use a stepped drill bit, which has built-in cutting surfaces.

Our shop in Moultonborough, NH uses drilling in specific situations; when it is either the best process for the job or the most economical. We use three different processes; spot drilling, peck drilling, and orbital drilling. Want to learn more about our machine service? Have specific questions for the drilling process? If so, contact DeMeo Associates, LLC at (603) 998-7272 at any time. We will be happy to help!
